All proceeds benefit the Plus-1 program, a partnership between MIFA and MLGW that was created in 1982 to provide utility assistance for families in crisis. Plus-1 is primarily funded by MLGW customers who add $1 or more to their monthly utility bills. These funds go to MIFA each month, and MIFA screens clients for eligibility and authorizes payments from the Plus-1 fund to their accounts. The average eligible household receives approximately $296 in assistance plus negotiation with MLGW to establish a payment plan for the balance of their bill. A random sampling of clients has shown that 89% of clients helped through Plus-1 have their utilities on six months later.
